ASTRA DISP®

Why do we use  dispersing additives?

The use of wetting and dispersing additives is crucial in the production of pigmented coatings. This is due to the need for a uniform distribution of solid pigments within the liquid binder solution. If the pigment grinding process is not optimized, various defects can occur, such as flocculation, reduced gloss, color shift, separation, Bénard cells formation, and settling. This can also have an impact on the flow properties of the coating system, leading to issues like sagging and leveling.

ASTRA DISP series

Key Benefits:

Uniform Pigment Distribution: Dispersing additives ensure that pigments are evenly distributed throughout the binder, which is essential for achieving consistent color and texture in coatings.
Prevention of Defects: When pigments are not adequately dispersed, a variety of defects can emerge, such as:
Flocculation: Pigments clump together, leading to uneven color and poor film formation.
Reduced Gloss: A poor dispersion can diminish the gloss level of the final product, making it appear dull.
Color Shift: Improper pigment distribution can result in unintended color variations, affecting the visual appeal of the coating.
Separation: Pigments can separate from the binder over time, leading to settling and inconsistent application.
Bénard Cells Formation: An uneven dispersion can cause hexagonal patterns to form on the coating surface, known as Bénard cells.
Enhanced Flow and Leveling Properties: Proper dispersion is essential for maintaining the desired flow and leveling of the coating. Without dispersing additives, issues such as sagging (when the coating runs or drips) and poor leveling (uneven surface finish) can occur.

Impact on Coating Performance:

Using dispersing additives not only improves the visual and physical properties of coatings but also enhances their durability and longevity. A well-dispersed pigment system contributes to a more stable, vibrant, and defect-free final product, making it essential for industries where high-quality finishes are required, such as automotive, construction, and industrial coatings.
By incorporating dispersing additives into your formulations, you can ensure optimal pigment distribution, improve coating performance, and prevent common defects.
